Adobe Premiere Elements and Windows 7 preview playback problem

I have a brand new copy of Premiere Elements 7, and a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit.
I can capture video no problem, and it splits it into clips appropriately, and everything seems fine, until I hit "play" on the preview window.
The first 2 seconds play just fine, and then the video freezes, but the timeline keeps moving and the audio keeps going.
If I jog through the video frame-by-frame, it works. Just on normal playback, the video freezes.
The program acts as if nothing is wrong; I can edit, make transitions, etc - but not having playback is a gigantic problem.
I know what Adobe has to say about this: Unsupported configuration.
Any insight?
My hardware is appropriate: Phenom II X4 810, 2gb ram, raptor HD
