:grumble: I reinstalled Windows XP & at first my laptop would only boot in the windows advanced settings screen, I got it to stop doing that... not sure how? Now when I restart my settings are not saved... like my address bar is gone my mouse settings are not saved. Can someone out there help me?

Is the system making it all the way through the shutdown process when you turn it off?

Yes it is. Why? Do you have an idea why it is acking this way?

Not shutting down properly causes some settings to be lost, and some files to potentially become corrupted, either of which could have explained the issue. It was simply the most likely problem, and the most obvious question to ask, if it's not that, then we need to start eliminating possibilities.

Give us some more details first:

    What laptop is it specifically?
Have you modified the hardware at all?
    Why did you reinstall?
Did you fully you reformat first?
What version and SP of windows did you install?
Has Windows Update run since install?
Anything else stand out about the PCs behavior?

If we get that info, we should be able to lead you down the right path to figuring this out.

    I have a Inspiron B130 Dell laptop
Yes I reinstalled & at first when it rebooted it would always go to the Advanced Settings page, & it was showing two windows XPs to pick from... I got that to stop.
Reformat? I reinstalled with Windows XP disk.
Yes I have been doing windows updates. I have SP 3 now.
My mouse settings get reset, address bar is gone, language bar is back on toolbar.
I can't think of anything else right now.
Thank you for helping me, by the way :)

    You're welcome :)

    Okay:

The issue is that you have Windows installed twice on the same drive, which is not only causing config file problems, which you are seeing, but also causing some other problems in the background which you are not seeing (slow-downs, wasted HD space, etc.)

The easiest way to fix this is to reinstall again, this time making sure to install to a freshly formatted drive.

Make sure you back up what you need first.

When you boot from your Windows XP CD, it takes you into a text-only menu system at first, where it asks you which drive to install to. At the drive list, make sure to delete any partitions on the primary drive. The drive list will then show [unpartitioned space] <unpartitioned space=""> instead of any drive leters or descriptions. select this to install Windows onto.

It will ask if you want to do a full or quick format. Tell it you want to do a full format. After that, it should take over the install process for you, just like it did last time.</unpartitioned>

I'm just not sure if I want to update to SP3 because every time I do, the address box is gone from my toolbar.
