Registry - Classes_Root - loads of junk

A PC I am looking at has a ton of junk in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - rather than just proper file extensions it has all sorts of junk, see the attached pictures.

I am trying to run Windows Easy Transfer Tool, and looking at the xml error file which it produces when it tries to run I think it's related to this.

I tried CCleaner on the registry and it found and cleaned up nearly 200 entries, however, the junk still persists - any tips besides manual removal? - And if it comes down to that, how do I know what's legitimate and what's junk?

Hopefully you can see from the scroll bar in the pics the size of the problem!

    Free-Window-Registry-Repair may help your problem.
I have used this on all my pc's for a few yrs now with good results.
Never had it remove anything critical or do damage.
Just in case though there's a setting in options to backup the registry before fixing the registry problems.
Hope this helps cure your problem. Let us know if it does.

NP, I hope it does the job.
There's no telling if anything works until it's tried and true.
I think it should make quite a difference though.

It found and fixed 1077 errors, however, this still didn't tidy or delete the dodgy registry keys.

I spent a while trying to suss it out yesterday too, so I've decided to try and migrate manually, I didn't want to as the Easy Transfer Tool has worked a dream on the first 28 PCs but there you go. Luckily it was a newer user, so hopefully they have less settings / configuration, cos they sure do now!

I suppose getting rid of them at some point would still be beneficial though :/

They're harmless. Why fuss over them?
