XP Boot Loop problem...

edited August 2009 in Science & Tech
Have a PC running XP Home that will not boot. Stuck in a loop which restarts the machine at some point in the load drivers cycle. When using Windows Recovery it does not see the C: dirve at all just the H: partion setup by dell.

Using a XP Home CD I was able to request a recovery scan which blue scrfeened showing SystemRoot\System32\config\SECURITY was damaged or missing.

anyone know what virus/worm randomly erases/changes files in NTFS?

Could be a virus but I doubt it. More likely to be a dieing hard disk though. Can you boot to safe mode?

Download DFT or Seatools, create a bootable CD and run one to scan your disk. you may need to replace it which could be problematic in a Dell unless you have a windows CD.

HD Failure was the problem - Have an XP CD so a new drive will be installed. Unfortunately the warranty on the HD has run out.... but HD prices have definitely dropped! This Thread is now CLOSED.
