mmtask is a multimedia task, usually used for web desktops, coordinating the sound and video lots of folks like, and etc.

One way to get it not to interfere with your taskbar, is to right click a blank part of your taskbar, and choose the classic taskbar.

One way to kill it is to use CTRL-ALT-DEL once and get a list or what is running, clcik on or down arrow down until mmtask is highlighted, than either disable or "end task" and let it end the task. However, that might only work right if you have, in XP, windows in Classic mode theme.

Related to that is mstask.... That is a different beast.

So, what Windows version do you have, first, and are you sure you meant mmtask and did not mean mstask???

    Process File: mmtask or mmtask.tsk
    Process Name: Multimedia Support Task
Description: The Windows Multimedia Background Task Support Module handles multimedia services.provides simulated multitasking for multimedia applications, so that, for example, you could be playing more than one AVI movie at the same time. This task does not exist in Windows NT4/2000/XP which are true multitasking operating systems.
    Company: Microsoft Corp.
    System Process: Yes
    Security Risk ( Virus/Trojan/Worm/Adware/Spyware ): No
    Common Errors: N/A
I'm guessing you're using Windows 98 or ME. Could you explain how your taskbar is "going crazy"? To end the task just hit Ctrl Alt Del at the same time. It will show Task Manager. Select mmtask from the list and hit Enter (I think) or some button that says "End Process" or something. Been yrs since I've used 98/ME.

BTW! Welcom to Short-Media and enjoy your stay.

 WOW! You guys are great!

i posted my message 1/2 hour ago and have all these repies allready!

but im still not over my probeblem,

ok ill explain further my probeblem because before i really didnt think i would get any reply!

Well, i start my computer ( Win ME , Pentium 3 350mhz , 12gig) sounds rubbish i know but i built it myself. anyway, i start my computer ,log on, and it all loads up....... with one problem, if i move my mouse over the taskbar i simply get the hourglass (cursor changes, like its working ), i have no hdd activity while this is happening and the taskbar just stays immobile, start and all. I then press ctrl+alt+del and see that 'WinSevren' (or something like that ) is not responding, so i end it. After that the taskbar works fine  , just like it udsed to, until my screensaver comes on or the display mode changes slightly (like going full-screen), and then my taskbar goes mad... it goes white in areas or goes immobile, this time without the hourglass!

It has worked fine up until recently!
I ran DR WATSON and it said ' if your taskbar is acting strangely try ending mmtask ' so i guessed that this woul be under the ctrl+alt+del thing and tried it, but mmtask is not there!

Hope you can help id be so thankful if you can!

    Thanks, FaCz

Try going to http://www.antivirus.com/ and run the thing called housecall (remote virus scanner, still free for folks with home machines). Alterantively, you can scan at the Symantec Security Response center's scanner and write down the virus names that are found. Let us know what they are, I can find removers for many and instructions for removing them for you if no remover available. Under these circumstances, if you have AV software of year 2002 or earlier dating, you will need newer antivirus software (there are viruses that disable older AV software, and not just 2-3 of them for the year 2002 software). The online scanners let you ID viruses, but do nto remove them for you.

This is especially true if what you got an error about was "winserver." There are some viruses that the Symantec AV Encyclopedia gave me hits on with that search. Two spread via email, one via IRC and Kazaa and Morpheus and iMesh.

That behavior sounds like partly a virus infected machine, with ME, sorry to say.
