My Laptop died last night :( Can anyone help me enact computer-necromancy on it?

So yeah. Last night, I was running around doing errands and such, and at one point when I hopped back to my place, my roommate informed me that he had seen my computer (Compaq Presario V6000 running Vista 32bit) BSOD, and that when he went to look at the BSOD he saw that it was saying something about "nvstor", but before he could see more it shut itself down. I went over to the computer, and it looked like it was restarting, as it was doing this.

I went "Ok", and left to do anothe errand. When I came back an hour or so later...it was still on that screen.

So I shut it off. Then restarted it. It still hung up on that screen.
I started it again in safe mode. Safe mode failed to load, hanging up on a file it was attempting to load that, if i remember correctly, was called something like "crcsys" (It was crc something, i know for sure). Tried these a few times more. Then we noticed that the hard drive light would be on the whole time it was hanging up on the vista boot screen or the safe mode loader.

I stuck my ear down beside the computer, and the hard drive was making a repeating noise over and over again once it started hanging. It wasn't loud, and besides the repetition, sounded like a normal hard drive noise; so i don't think the HD is shattered or anything like that.

We then used a Ubuntu CD and booted Ubuntu up from that, then tried to mount my Hard Drive so that I could update my backups. Ubuntu told us that as the hard drive hadn't been shut down correctly it was still being held as NTFS by Windows (or something like that) and couldn't be mounted in Ubuntu unless we wanted to do some Terminal shenanigans that might make us loose data from the hard drive.

With little to loose, we did the Terminal shenanigans, and were able to mount my hard drive (my roommate mounted the drive in Terminal in read-only mode in the hopes that that would lower the likelihood of data loss or what-have-you). This was successful, and I was able to update my backups (on an external hard drive) and was able to back up a few things I normally didn't back up (like my HLDJ sound library ;D).

So my files are generally safe. But the laptop is still hanging when I try to open Windows. :confused2

Does anyone have any ideas how I can turn my computer into this:  instead of this: :sawed:?

EDIT: It's worth pointing out that I have no idea what caused it. My roommate suggested that since the BSOD talked about nvstor, it might be related to my nvidia graphics card...or whatever crcsys is? For all I know, it could be a virus.

EDIT2: In webtrawling to try and find a solution, I found this, which seems to match my problem, but between the broken english, my lack of computer repair skills, and the fact that people there say "crcsys problems are caused by many things" and they include many solutions (some of which I know are bad), I'm not sure what to do. :(

    Sounds like formattin' time.

If you've saved all your files anyhow, seems as good a time as any to get a fresh start. Any reason why you wouldn't want to go that route?

It's like one-stop shopping for error fixes!

The only reason I wouldn't go that route would be that I have no trust in my ability to deal with hardware issues. :|

And i've never reinstalled an OS on a laptop (So I'm worried about drivers issues. How do I make sure I don't loose my speshul laptop buttons and touch pad drivers!?)

And this of course leads me to the next question...what OS to install? XP, Vista, or Windows 7?

(Also, I have a recovery partition on my computer that was there when I bought the computer...what does that do? Is that at all useful for reinstalling Vista?)

Sorry for all the stupid questions. I'm a master of web-browsing, multimedia software, and internet culture, but my computer hardware and repair knowledge is very limited.

The recovery partition will restore your laptop to the exact state it was in when you bought it - it's essentially a reinstall, but with some extra crappy bloatware you probably don't want. It will definitely contain all the old drivers it came with - meaning if you updated drivers, you'd have to do that again, but at least everything would likely work out of the box. If it worked when you bought it, it'll work after a recovery format (unless hardware is the culprit, of course).

Otherwise, if you want to install the Win 7 release candidate, I don't know anybody that's had significant driver problems with it - it's recognized almost every piece of hardware most people have installed it on. That said, if you install 7, you might have to reinstall when the full version comes out - if you're going to buy the full version.

Looking on the website for my laptop model, I get this, which doesn't list any drivers for Windows 7 (although it doesn't explicitly say the Vista drivers won't work in 7, so i'm assuming they should probably work in Windows 7).
The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours.

Is 7 supposed to be fully released before that date? I ask because that date puts it right in the middle of the end of the semester, which could cause significant problems. If Windows 7 comes out before that though, I'll certainly be purchasing it by then...

Hmm. I don't know. I'll have to do some thinking about it.

EDIT: Upon further consideration, I think i'm going to just try to recover Vista to it's purchased state. The bloatware is not a big issue, as I know what stuff from the bloatware I can remove. If THAT fails, I'll go with Windows 7, and if THAT fails, I'll just format the whole shebang (again) and try to get Vista or XP going from discs.

Wow, that soon? In any case, I'm going with the Vista recovery, because I know that'll work.

Thanks so much for your help Snark!
