XP crashes every 7 days with Config.sys corrupted or missing after Norton Tech

edited August 2009 in Science & Tech
I had problems with Norton not being able to update definitions, I contacted Norton and they convinced me to let them take control of my PC to re-install Norton 2009, they did and Norton worked fine.

On Saturday afternoon by PC crashed with "Config.sys missing or corrupt", got the PC running again and it has now happened every 7 days, if the PC is repaired on a Saturday it crashes again the next Saturday, last week it repaired on Sunday by Geek Squad and yesterday it crashed again.

Is there a virus that could have been inserted in my PC that responds to an external command, this PC is running XP Pro, with SP3.

Any help would be appreciated, Norton don't think it their problem. Maybe time to switch virus protection companies.

    1. Download and run this: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
    2. Download and install this: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

This procedure will remove any trace of Norton's software and install a superior anti-virus solution that is 100% free. No, that's not a joke, yes it's free, and yes it really is better than Norton's junk.

We'll see if that solves the problem, then go from there if it doesn't.

Doesn't sound like a virus to me. Sounds like you've got some corrupted system files, bad ram or possibly a failing harddrive.

Is that Config.sys.... error message the exact message or is there more to it? Windows XP doesn't need config.sys anymore. If you have a config.sys it'll use certain instructions in it but it's not needed.

If you go into start>run and type in: notepad c:\config.sys is anything displayed?

The config.sys is corrupt or missing, when you do get to it, it has 0 K as file size, the drive system is a raid system and we made a very though test of the ram. It tells you to put the original Windows disk in and boot from it, it goes through the complete sequence and then when windows starts to load I get the blue screen of death, saying it shut down to protect the PC. But the 7 day is really interesting, the last time the geek squad had it was last Sunday, they finished work on it at approx 7.00pm, yesterday at 7.00pm ish it crashed, this is the 4th time, 7 days apart.

If you have the OS try doing a repair install after you've removed norton.

Just thinking, check in your norton settings and see if it's got any events that only run once a week, like a full system scan for example.
