Too many pings! (Resolved)

So, I looked into my trend micro internet security logs and under the "Personal Firewall" pulldown menu option, I found a TON or pings (echo requests, as trend puts it)! About 4 of them every minute or so that this computer and my Westell Versalink modem/router (don't know which it is) are both on at the same time. Is this a DoS attack, or is this something wrong with my pc and/or network like a virus? And in either case, how do I fix it and/or stop the attack? The echo requests come from IP 192.168.1.1 (my router/modem) and stop here at 192.168.1.43 (my local IP). Trend niether gives me a source port nor a destination port, or an application path or application description. Just the time, Protocol (it says "ICMP"), type (it says Firewall), Description (it says "Echo Request"), and of course the 2 IPs I already mentioned. I'm at a loss because whatever I do doesn't seem to stop them from appearing, and I can't seem to find more information about them other than what I've already told you. The funny thing is I haven't seen any effects on my pc that suggest it might be a DoS attack other than maybe the occasional lag spike in wow, and the fact that my latency is kinda high (around 200 :sad2:). So, any help would be appreciated.
By the way if it helps at all my ISP is Fairpoint.

Do you have, or have you ever had any P2P progams on the machine ?
  • edited August 2009
I am ashamed of it, but yeah I did used to use Utorrent. It has since been uninstalled.

    EDIT:
Recently while web-browsing (pretty much actually just here at Icrontic XD) I try to go to a new page via either clicking a link or plugging in a URL and I get an error message saying my connection was interrupted. It didn't happen often, only once every 5 or ten minutes, depending on how often I switched to a different page. Just now, though, It happened like 5 times in a row, and it's somewhat nerve wracking because I've had PC security problems before and it's never any fun to deal with, at least not for me. Your mention of P2P programs reminds me of the last time I had to bring it in to be fixed. I'm not sure what the technician did with it, but most of my programs and data were gone afterwards, including utorrent. I havn't used it or done anything with a P2P program since, but could it be the cause of what's happening now? Like, did it inadvertently open up some back door that just now someone's taking advantage of? I did have my modem's firewall set to port forward for it, but that stopped when UTorrent did. Anyways, I'm just telling you all this so that you have as much info as I can give you that might help. Thanks :)

When you use any P2P program, you broadcast your address to the entire internet.
It's possible that the "pings" you are seeing are just other machines trying to see if you still have files to share.

We can run a few scans if you like to make sure nothing nasty is present.

    Download and Run ComboFix
Please delete the copy of ComboFix that you have and download an updated copy from one of the links below
    • Please visit this webpage for instructions on using ComboFix:
      http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

      ComboFix.exe
      ComboFix.exe
    • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
    • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
    • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
    • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

    Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

    As for the batch file:

    File Found

Now, I have both of the logs that you requested from me, but there's a little thing about how I've been forced to post them... After the HiJack This scan and log (i didn't tell it to fix anything at all just to scan and make a log file) I found that I couldn't use any browser (firefox or IE) to access any website at all. I wasn't even being given an error, I would just type in the URL and the page woul come up blank, with "Done" in the bottom left-hand corner. So, I restarted and had the same problem. I looked in trend micro's log files to see (to my dismay) that the pings were coming in an erratic pattern, sometimes 3 times in one second, sometimes once per minute, but just in one random minute i saw a total of 36 echo requests. I'm just gonna hazard a guess and say it's a dos attack, since i cant do anything online, and not really something connected to P2P in the way you expect, especially since the pings only showed up a month ago. Anyways, I used my flash drive to copy the logs and I'm on my friend's laptop (it apparently hasn't become swamped by pings yet, although it is getting them) and now I'm postimg them from here. And here they are:

There you go, I hope this helps.

Did you lose connection after running HJT or Combofix ?

    Download and Run RSIT
    • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
      • log.txt will be opened maximized.
      • info.txt will be opened minimized.
    • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.
( They can also be found in the C:\RSIT folder )

I'm pretty sure I lost connection after HJT, because I was able to browse to download HJT. Also, the new pings that are happening much more often now (sometimes 12 times a second now) I just noticed aren't going from my router to my pc but from my pc to some random IP address(es). Or actually there are some from Random IP's to my PC too. All of those ones are described as "Destination Unreachable," or "Security Rule Matched." I used TM's network cutoff switch to stop all network/internet traffic. Now, I also didn't yet do what you requested last post because I went to click on the link you gave me, and when I did TM opened a page instead saying that it doesn't reccomend going to that link because it's potentially dangerous (this is on the laptop, of course, which also has Trend Micro Internet Security). Anyways, thanks again.

HJT doesn't make any changes unless you tell it to, so I don't see how that could have stopped your internet.
Combofix creates a fresh restore point before it runs, please restore to that point.

FYI, any links I post are safe
  • edited August 2009
Alright the only system restore point I saw for that day (and I made sure of the date by looking at the Combofix log) was a software distribution restore point (no idea what it was for...). So, I went to the previous day and here I am sitting on the problem computer now able to once again access the internet. :) The two other types of firewall troubles have stopped, pretty much. Once in a while I get a random "security rule matched" TCP... thing, and of course the usual ICMP pings, but other than that the rest are gone. So, that being said would you like me to download and run RSIT now?
  • edited August 2009
There is no need to post logs if you aren't having any problems :)
  • edited August 2009
Well, just to be sure I'm still getting the many echo requests, but as far as I can tell they aren't causing anything else bad to happen to my pc, other than making a ton of entries in my TM logs. Should I be worried if that's just the case? Also, should I be worried about the few "Security Rule Matched" entries in the log that happen every so often (like, a few times an hour maybe)? They go to an IP I looked up, apparently it's the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.
  • edited August 2009
There will always be machines trying to contact your computer.
It's the nature of the internet.

Unless you are actually having problems, I wouldn't worry about it.
