Windows Live Messenger fail..

hi,
i downloaded latest version of WLM and although i can login and see all contacts, when i send messages, they do not receive them. Ive run the connection troubleshooter and it says i have a problem with key ports. When i click repair the problem persists. Also in the TCP box it says cannot connect to the service. i am also unable to ping messenger.msn.com.

    Can you ping google.com?

    If the answer is no, we're looking for a network related problem. Disable any firewalls on the computer and retry, if it works, troubleshoot from there. If it doesn't, we're going to need details on your ISP and networking setup.

    Edit - remember to turn the firewall back on afterward, if there is one.

    yes i can ping www.google.com.au also my firewall is the built in XP SP2 firewall which i have turned off. I ran a tracert for messenger.msn.com and it seemd to drop out on the 11th hop

    Sounds like there's probably just an internet router down somewhere between you and the MSN messenger service server... could be someone's doing maintenance, or had a crash, or any other number of possible explanations.

    There's nothing you can do about it, unfortunately. Keep trying, it should start working eventually.

    ahhh so that means that everyone in my area will have the same problem?
    or does it mean there is something with my router in particular

    It could be everyone in your area has the problem, although there is still a small chance it's a problem with your network setup. You can always try power cycling.

    hmmm still seems to be down. when i test for TCP connectivity it fails to reach the server

    Try removing the router from the chain and see if it works (ie hook your modem directly up to your PC). If it starts working properly, your router may not be fully UPnP (universal plug 'n play) compatible.

    There can be other reasons it wouldn't work besides that. Never presume anything when dealing with a networking problem, that's what I've learned in my experience - it goes against common knowledge because doing the same thing twice actually can (and often does) produce different results...

    well too my surprise the messenger seems to be working to its normal functionalities at the moment..the problem dissapeared as quickly as it came. even though i still cannot ping messenger.msn.com

    What could be happening is the Australian government's IP filter that they've implemented (to supposedly filter out porn) has been blocking you. Just a guess.
