Is this possible? File sharing over wireless network.

Hey there, I got a new laptop for college and I want to put some of my stuff, music, files etc from my primary computer (tower) over to my laptop.

Both computers are connected to our wireless network wirelessly.

My tower computer is running Windows XP.
The laptop is running Windows Vista.

Is it possible for me to send music, files via the wireless network from my tower to my laptop? If so, how? I've been fiddling with the sharing/networking stuff but I just cant figure out how. All the folders are in different places on the computers. Could someone help me out here?

Any help is much appreciated :)

File sharing on a wireless network works exactly the same way as it does on a wired network, just slower.

I would recommend doing major file transfers with an external HD.

Ok, I will use our external harddrive but I would still like to set up file sharing for my tower. With the laptop I can see my other tower on the network and access its shared folder but I cannot see this tower. It appears that this tower is not visible on the network. I have done the network setup wizard and enabled file sharing but it is still not visible... How can I fix this?

Are they all on the same workgroup? Do they have different computer names?

did you actually setup a share?

I stream media across our wireless network to our media center, works fine. as for actually coping files, large ones, grab a portable drive. unless you dont care how long it takes or do it over night

They all have different computer names. All of them are on MSHOME work group I believe.

It's just the main tower that wont show up on the network. I can access the other towers shared area from the laptop...

The redundancy of this statement is almost redundant.;D

Is Windows firewall or any other firewall active on the tower?

zonealarm by default will block shares, dunno why, but it does.

Presumably because most PCs are configured to use NetBIOS for shares, and NetBIOS is a gaping security hole.

lol, well the wireless router does have ethernet ports and the other tower is connected via a wire.

The laptop is using Windows Vista Home Premium and the Tower is on Windows XP Pro. The firewall has actually been turned off on the tower and it still doesnt work...
