my desk top is messed up.

i can't get on to the interner. when i try to all i get is the page can not be displayed error . i can't even pull up the 198.162.1.1 page . i have a computer hooked up wireless and it works but my desktop doesn't and it is hooked up directly . i have tried everything and can't figure it out. anyone have any suggestions?

    Two things. I assume that was just a typo. You tried to go to "198.162.1.1" and I guarantee you meant 192.168.1.1. Right?

    Is this XP? If so, go to Start> Control Panel> Network Connections. Then right click on the Local Connection your router is plugged into, then left click Status. Then click the Support tab on that new window. What is your IP address? Does it start with a 192 or does it start with a 169?
