Windows Vista a slow internet connecting

My wife just bought a laptop and the wireless takes about 10mins to fully connect up to the internet. My question is
Why does my xp computers connect in seconds and the vista (and win 7) take so long.
It's a Linksys wireless router that supports all networks including n. It;s about a year old. It's completely open, no special passwords or wep keys. Does vista have some sort of stupid security thing and if so how can I turn this off.
