Cloning XP Pro SP3 HD on larger disk

edited August 2009 in Science & Tech
People,

My current 250 gig HD is out of space. I bought a 500 gig drive and using partition magic (V8) copied both partitions from the smaller to the larger HD expanding both partitions. But the disk would not boot all the way to command level (safe mode did not work either). It appears to hang with the initial welcome screen with the windows logo, before XP does user validation. There are no error messages.

I booted from a slip streamed XP Pro SP3 CD and from the repair console ran fixmbr. It reported that the mbr had a problem and claimed to have fixed it. But the problem continues. Note that running the fixmbr command a second time still claims there is a problem.

The new disk is a SATA 3 unit, the old disk is EIDE. If I boot the system from the old disk, every thing is fine. The new disk is accessible. The new disk C partition is active and visible.

Can anyone suggest where to start?

Dave

I'd start by booting into the Recovery Console again and running chkdsk /R on the disk. I'd then run both fixboot and fixmbr on the disk.
