"CD Recording Software" Drivers

edited September 2009 in Science & Tech
The only time I let my sister use my computer, she royally screwed it up. My operating system is XP and she put a Roxio disc in that is only for 2000/ ME/ 98.

Now, everytime I start up my computer it takes about 10 minutes to fully load everything and I get a pop-up warning in the right hand corner saying something along the lines of, "CD Recording Software has drivers incompatible with XP. XP was prevented them from loading, which may make your system unstable."

The installation of the program was incomplete. I've searched my computer for any elements of that program that was left on it, and I can't find it. I tried re-installing it to see if I could install it fully and then remove all components (which probably wasn't a smart idea), but it didn't work anyway.

How can I fix this? My computer has been running dirt slow ever since and I need to find the drivers that are doing this. I know how to get to my CABS folder but I'm not going to be deleting any drivers because I don't know which ones are vital to my system. Please help!

Have you tried add/remove programmes from control panel?

Yes, but there's no program listed to remove.

You could try having a look in device manager. I have a feeling that Roxio installs some virtual drivers. You may be able to remove the driver from there.

I suspect that something (Driver or Software) is trying to load on startup and either failing to load or once loaded it is conflicting with the OS.

You could try installing CCleaner and using its registry cleaner. If it isn't listed in add/remove programs there is a chance that CCleaner will pick up that it is not installed correctly and remove any auto start funtions from the registry.

Have a look in task manager to see if there is any process using excessive RAM or CPU. You could also post me a Hijack this log and that will tell me if there are any Roxio components running.

Do them in that order and make sure you run Hijack this just after startup on a fresh boot. All of the above mentioned programs are free ware and can be found from www.downloads.com

let me know if your aren't sure about any of my instructions and DON NOT try to fix anything in Hijack this until instructed to do so.

I cant see anything relating to Roxio in your log. Have you tried system restore?

And just to check did you do CCleaner registry clean or disk clean or both?

    I did both.

The exact error message that pops up when I boot up my computer is:

"(! sign in a yellow triangle like in subject line) Devices or applications disabled"
'CD Recording Software' will cause Windows to become unstable. Windows has prevented these drivers from loading. Click here for more details.

When I click for more details, it says an incompatible Roxio program or Windows Media Player program was installed and to remove those components. My sister put on a Roxio one when this all started and she says she doesn't remember if drivers were individually installed from a website or with the installation attempt of the disc.

Your best option is to do system restore to take your computer back to before she installed it.

Give that a go. If that fails we will need to know exactly what Roxio program has been installed

If it was EZCD Creator 4 or 5 RoxiZap will get rid of the bad files... The software was taken down but a forum member has it archived.

    Good Luck!

Hey Troll (a fellow Nova Scotian!),

It was EZCD 4 and I used the Roxizap and it worked! Thanks so much for getting it off my computer. A lesson learned to not let my sister anywhere NEAR my computer again. Many thanks to you and RichD for helping me with my problem.
