No Icons, taskbar, tasmanager, nadda

My computer boots to the desktop, where I see the standard windows wallpaper. That's it. There are no icon, no taskbar, no start menu. Nothing happens when I hit ctrl+alt+del, or ctrl+shift+esc. I do get a mouse pointer. I can right click on the wallpaper and create a new folder. I've tried to explore it or open it. No dice. I can reboot in safe mode and everything's fine in there. I've tried everything I could find in as many forums as I could find. No change. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
