Without looking at benchmarks, I'm fairly sure the HD4850 offers higher performance than the 9800 GTX. Your power supply is a bit small, but it should have enough pep for one graphics card.

Unless you're running a monitor that supports 1080P there's no reason for you to get the 1GB version of the HD 4850. Save yourself the money and get a 512MB version. Otherwise I would recommend you step it up to an HD 4870 for $15 more but it's highly unlikely your PSU would support it.

Also, the info you posted about your power supply tells almost nothing. The number of amps on the rails is much more important to know than the names of the rails.

With that smaller 400 watt power supply I would highly recommend the 4770 in that range. The 4850 is technicaly a little more powerful (not substantially), but the 4770 is on a 40 nm process that is much more power efficient. A hair faster than the Nvidia 9800 GT in most benchmarks, but it sips power and runs fairly cool.

I'd call that more than a hair. It also consumes 20W less at load.

Well, if I jump up and down beating my drum I normally get beat up around here because everyone knows I'm the resident Radeon graphics fanboy.

If anyone is insistent on running a gaming grade card on a 400 watt power supply, imo the 4770 is the only viable option. It gets you something that will play anything at a respectable frame rate, and most games in high res high settings except maybe Crysis which you will have to make a few small compromises on to get it past 30 FPS. Its combination of processing performance and low power draw are essential unless you feel like doing a power supply upgrade to get into something more substantial.
