The problem is that the screen won't stay put you have to hold
it up or it will close or fall all the way open.
So the question I have is there a way to tighten it so will stay
open when I open it without having something in back of it holding
it?

Some laptops have hinge clamps that you can tighten some don't. In order to do so though you'll have to open up the case to find out or if you give us the make/model we may be able to tell you specifically.

Need the model of the laptop. I've fixed several laptop screen hinges.

That's an old one... I've taken at least one of these apart in the past... IIRC you won't be able to tighten the hinges, but you can replace them if you want to shell out the cash for replacement hinges. You should be able to find a service manual that can walk you through replacing them on the Dell support site. Some sites will even include the instructions with the hinges.

Here is the Dell Service Manual for the C610. You buy the hinges and then follow the manual and it can be done with some care. ;)
