is there any advantage to having blu ray on a laptop?

I'm currently looking at the MSI GT729 which has them as an option.

btw, I'm told that the ETA for this machine is Mid to Late September.

Not unless you want to watch movies on your laptop, and the laptop has a 1080p screen (not likely).

Depending on how much extra they charge for it and what connections it has and whether you have an HD TV it could be a cheap way of getting an Blue Ray player to plug into your TV? Would be a bit of a pain in the arse to have to keep plugging it in and un plugging it though!

Xotic PC has 2x blue ray for 149 and 4x blue ray for 359.

this unfortunately ups the price of the laptop. if the price for the blue ray comes down a good bit, I might reconsider.....
