Browser displays in Black & White

My dad passed away and I'm trying to set up his computer for my Mom. He has an HP Monitor and Window XP.

What I notice is that the desktop and all software on the system is in full color, but the browsers, be they IE, Mozilla or other all display in black & white. I wouldn't care but the radial buttons don't display at all.

I can't teach my mom to "click here" if there's no where to cllick. What happened here? Thanks!:confused2

    Hello,

I am not quite sure what you mean by black and white. Can you take a screen capture?

Open the browser in question, press and hold Shift, the press the PrtScn/SysRq button. Then open MS Paint and select paste. Now File > Save and name it.

Now attach it to a post here.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Icrontic.

Make sure you save it as a .PNG file so it can be uploaded quickly! :)

I have it saved in Paint, but when I click on the "add an image" button on this site, it keeps asking for a link (http:_______). How can I add the image that I saved in Paint. Also, when I click the arrow next to the A for color(between the Underline and the Link buttom above where I'm typing) just above this area I'm typing in, it brings down forty boxes that have no color in them. Usually the A has a line of the last color used and the forty boxes have colors that I can change the font to. Hoping this helps. Anyway, got the image you asked for in paint but can't figure how to attach it. Help!

Scroll down just a bit below the reply box.

You will see "manage attachments" click that button.

Then you have 3 lines where you can browse to a location on your hard drive (hit the browse button to the right) and once you locate your paint file, double click it.

Now hit the upload button and it will confirm the upload. Then close that window, type a couple words in the reply window and then hit the post button :)

Notice that there are black lines thru the radial buttons that say delete and move to (that entire row) and, there are supposed to be stars to the right of each email that are used as flags and they can't be seen at all. Also not that the background (desktop) has no problem with it's color...it's only in the browsers.

Here's another. The star box is supposed to be between "select" and the name of the sender.

Is your Java up to date?

Have you tried going to java.com and updating?

Is this IE7 or 8? If 8, tried clicking the compatibility mode button?

    Marjjee:

In Internet Explorer, click the view button at the top of the window, then click style, then click default style.

What's weird though is that it's effecting both FireFox and IE, leads me to think it's not a Browser error or setting.

Can you put up a screen shot of the same web page in Firefox?

And, as you can see in this view, the desktop colors are fine.

It looks like your browser is ignoring style sheets from any web page you visit. Did you try what Thrax suggested above?

Edit: Never mind I see that you tried that already.

I have no idea what your site looks like on another system but if you look above at the print screens, one is of this site. Is that correct?

Actually, you just have a very interesting issue, and that means it'll take some time for answers to happen. That said, I personally believe you have a spyware issue. Go ahead and follow the instructions in this thread here: http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43902

I want to rule this one out before we go back to troubleshooting Windows.

I'm in TX only till Tuesday and as my Dad died last month and always handled the email, it was my desire to turn my 89 year old mom into an email diva, but it's harder to explain when the screens are missing radial buttons and things are lined out. Anyway, forgive my impatience.

I did the hijack scan and here are the results...let me now if this is legible or not.

Unfortunately posting screen shots to your hijack log are basically useless. We need a cut and paste of the log itself.

Didn't know how to do that. Did you want to read the log or by doing the cut and paste you have the ability to work with the log?

The log is saved in Notepad format.. just open the log (it actually opens for you when the program is done)

Copy and paste all that text here in a post :)
