Transfer Query

I was hoping someone could help me.
I bought a new iMac but it does not have a firewire connection (the one that is rounded at the top and square at the bottom)
I have an external harddrive that I need to transfer data from but it only has this connection.
Is there any way I can connect it through another harddrive at all? Or is the only way around this is buying a new cord to input straight into the computer?

I am not familiar with the hardware in an iMac but you can probably fit a firewire controler card.

Was your old machine also a Mac? If it was a PC then you Mac probably wont even read the disk
Alternatively hook up both mac's on the network and share the data that way.
