Palm should first understand that this spat does not help their image. They give the impression of an iPhone knock-off by piggybacking iTunes and fighting for it in public.
I don't have a smart phone and it would not be iPhone if I were buying one due to same reason Jared stated. Palm's spat is amusing and I root for them, but I am also afraid it will hurt them eventually.
Personally, that was one of the reasons why I bought the Pre. Not because it syncs with iTunes, which I really don't care about. The fact that they took the fight to Apple publicly made me want to support them monetarily. When this fight is over, whether Palm wins or loses the battle, we all will win the war. The reason why I say that is because it seems to me that Palm's methods for syncing with iTunes are less than ethical. Eventually, the courts are probably going to rule against Apple, and phone/mp3 player manufacturers will be able to sync with iTunes, but will probably have to pay licensing fees.
In the meantime, I'm going to continue to use iTunes 8.2.1.6 until Palm hAx0rs my phone again to support iTunes 9. I'm not really that big of a fan of iTunes, but I like to tell all my smug iPhone using friends about it.
You guys know how much I love my iPhone and many other Apple products but their policies and corporate culture are infuriating. Jared nailed it, this policy is bullshit.
I'm not sure I really think Palm should have won this because of the way they were getting around the blocking but Apple should never have blocked their devices in the first place.

The closed ecosystem can-only-use-itunes-with-apple policy is bullshit.
