after running ckkdsk /p i get ; the disk appears to have one or more unrecoverable errors. I can boot into safe mode for a few minuetes and then it reboots and asked to choose safe or normal or what and start in --secs to boot normally.. I had the SoftSafeness virus and I got rid of it, however I think i deleted some system32 files like hal.dll and maybe some others.. I emptied the recycle bin so they are gone ...the virus is gone too I think,, I have changed the mb and processor, upgrade, while I was working on it during this time..I have performed the "repair in 8 steps" contained in the forums twice to no avail..it did say the boot file was repaired but I have other issues I am afraid..any suggestions would be appreciated..thanks

I may be wrong here, and someone else will surely correct me if I am, but I'm 99% sure that you're going to have to do a clean install. Deleting things from system32 is a Very Bad Ideaâ„¢, just going by what you listed, hal.dll is part of the hardware abstraction layer without which Windows is utterly hosed. You're better off backing up your data and doing a clean install because the likelihood of getting your install working at this point is slim to none.

I'll defer to someone else at this point as I haven't done Windows administration in about a year and a half now but I'm pretty sure there are no other options. There's a certain point at which your only option is to reinstall no matter how much you beg and plead.

with that amount of file damage and a corruped hal. I seriously recommend doing a clean install. Repair installs often fail if that hall is buggered.

Furthermore if your harddrive has unrecoverable errors that's usually disk damage (I say usually because there are a few rare changes when it isn't physical). The only way to know for sure is to do a low level format of the drive and rebuild and scan again with your harddrive manufacture tools to see if the disk is actually physically damaged. If it is damaged ditch it. It's been my experience that once you get some physical damage, even if those spots are isolated it's just a matter of time before you'll get more and more.
