Major problems trying to network XPsp1 and win2000 pc. Never used win2000 so totally unfamiliar with its networking. 2000 pc not autoconfigurating LAN connection. XP netsetup disc doesnt work with 2000.

any ideas where i might be going wrong? :zombie:

Strongly suggest you spend a little money and get a router, especially if you are sharing a DSL or cable connection. You can get decent routers for very little $, and save yourself a lot of hassle.

To get the 2000 unit to use an internet connection from the XP unit, you need to enable Internet connection sharing on the XP. On the 2000, in the Network properties, you need to set manual IP's. You can't use DHCP as you do not have anything acting as a DHCP server for the 2000 box (like a router would.) You also need to set the proxy server settings on the internet connection for the 2000 box. But then you also need to manually set the IP's on the XP box to be a similar subnet. If you are using DHCP from a DSL or cable connection, you can't do this, and you are screwed, I think.

A router simplifies this whole process. I am using 2 boxes at home, one with 2000 and one with XP, and to set them up through the router to share my cable connection was quick and easy, on a $29 (Cdn) router.

Yes XP rig is connected to cable modem. It also uses dhcp from cable isp. I have ICS enabled on XP pc. Connection is fine for file transfer and peripherals sharing. Still cant work out how to config 2000 for ICS.

Any other way it can be done without using a router. If so i would be glad to have a fairly simple explanation of how to do it. What would be my proxy? the LAN network bridge? the cable modem address?

Thanks for the help so far

    OK. Sorted.

Hope this post helps someone else in this same dilemma.

Cable modem is connected to XPsp1 rig. Win2000 rig connected to xp rig via crosspatch cable. Run set up small office home network on XP with win2000 rig connected.

When done, on win2000 pc Control panel/internet options/setup. Then using the internet connection wizard, connect manually or through LAN > I connect through a LAN. Untick automatically discover proxy server (recommended). Setup mail if you want and complete the wizard. No further config needed.

You should be up and running. I was

No router and just need to see what happens over next few days.

When and if the 2000 box cannot find the XP box (you have two NICs in XP box I assume), look at XPs config and see if on the direct-connect NIC Network setup, you have a situation where the XP end IP has changed or you have a lease problem with 2000 expiring a lease. This happens from time to time without a router or switch that can feed DHCP.

One other thing that the right router can fix is to help protect the links within the LAN, right now you have a pipe from the web to the 2000 box that can be exploited many ways unless you have a firewall and up-to-date AV on the 2000 box and it can protect itself with the help of those programs.

if you have two nic card in the xp you dont need a cross over cable to run from the xp to 2000 just run normal cable
