Transferring Files Between Two Home Computers

I have Windows 7 running on both computers and I setup a homegroup. This worked fine for a few weeks and I started having problems with it. I fixed it and went another few weeks and it's acting up again. I'm trying to share an external drive I have connected to one computer to the other computer through a netgear router. What are my options? I would prefer an app or something I can just run on both computers when I need to transfer files. I could use torrents, but that would mean I have to create a torrent for each time I want to transfer something, then find a way to transfer the torrent file, etc....

Not sure why you're networking keeps acting up. If everything's set right you should be able to see the shares all the time. If you are loosing connectivity in general, turn off power management on the wireless cards. I've never trusted that crap, and fixed a few just because something was turning off the wireless card.

Once you get networking set, here are some options:
    1. Mapped drives: I have 3 mapped drives on my laptop that take me to shares on my Vista desktop. Then you can just drag and drop files to the mapped drive.
    2. Send To: Once you have drives mapped, make an entry in your user's "Send To" folder to one of your mapped drives. I have mine set so that I just rigght click on a file, and one of the Send To options just dumps it on the desktop of the other computer (which is one of my mapped drives). Then I move it when I get over there.
    3. SyncToy: I use it on my XP ThinkPad to sync all files with my Vista desktop. I've used it for years. MS says it works with Vista. Download it here.
    4. Offline Folders: I haven't used this but a lot of guys do. You keep all your files on one machine, and offline folders keeps them all synced up automatically.
    5. Shortcuts: You can also just make shortcuts on your desktop to shares on the other computer. Then you just drag and drop again.
Those all seem easier than a torrent to me.
