Out of scan range?

I just got this card from a trade, it is a Radeon 9700 Pro, and while I _REALLY_ don't want to blame the card, I cannot find any other reason my instability is occuring.

The most recent crash, I took note that I was simply going to a new website, when my screen went black and it said "Out of scan range", I had to reboot and when it did my screen settings were reset to 800x600 16bit, and crap like that.

I am hoping this can somehow be fixed... or any help at all?

This issue typically occurs if the signal from the video adapter exceeds the scan range of the monitor. Make sure your using a refresh rate compatible with your monitor and install the latest Radeon drivers from ATI.

    A couple of questions:
    1. Which drivers are you using, ATI Catalyst 3.10, third party?
    2. What is your refresh rate?

    75Hz

    and Cat 3.10's

I've run this Monitor on higher before, and i know it is SUPPOSED to be a refresh rate problem, however, this should NOT be the issue.

This sucks... it happens about once a day.

Eeerily reminiscent of, tho likely not related to, the issue with ATI cards (all makes 9700Pro) and E7205 motherboards. Crashes would go to 640X480 tho. The fix was to disable fast writes in bios/control panel and go to 4X AGP.

Having said that, I did not have this particular problem and the card in question above was mine. It ran fine on NF7-S, Gigabyte 8INXP, Asus P4C800-E Dlx, Asus P4PE, MSI K7N2-L. Monitor was/is Viewsonic A90 19" CRT @ 85 refresh 99% of the time.

I'm not trying to be defensive, RWB, just adding info. As noted in PM, I'll definitely stand behind it if there's a problem. Thx for not naming names but I don't mind these guys knowing it was mine. I'm hoping hard that this is something you can sort out at your end. It's late here but I'll try find time to do some searching around on other forums tomorrow, see if anyone else experiencing similar.

had a similar problem with my onboard gf4 mx in my shuttle. it kept defaulting to dual display and would get out of range, i would have to safe mode in and uninstall the drivers to get back into windows.

Ok, monitors will accept different defaults at different resolution and color depth (combination of both) settings. One way this CAN happen is for the inf file for the monitor itself to be messed up in Window's set of acceptable ranges per monitor. I have seen older monitors not accept rates that a good file says they will, AND have seen inf files sent to Microsoft be wrong for batches of monitors. See if the monitor mfr has released a new .inf file for the monitor you have, please. That ALONE could eliminate a lot of problems. Could be monitor "driver" which in this case IS an .inf file with acceptable rates for the monitor, or a monitor that simply is not doing DDC or DDC2 right or a monitor with a power supply that is going south or a monitor on an ovrloaded circuit that simpy is not getting enough power and is feeding junk when in DDC on bootup.

BUT, this looks like both adapter driver and monitor inf file.... I have fixed that with a limit of refresh rate in display properties. I click advanced button in settings tab, then Adapter tab, then tell it to use a refresh rate specifically. Unfortunately, this "out of range" can be triggered by a horizontal refresh rate out of spec also, and older montiors can have limited horizontal refresh rates-- so also can monitors with damaged power supplies from surges do exactly this thing. If monitor is in warranty, get with the monitor tech support folks, see if you have such a situation, please-- they might tell you where to find a new inf file for your monitor, or make you one of those if you report problem to them.

//ADDED: Monitor mfrs can trace back to batch from serial number, usually. Repeated issues from same batch will give them data that makes revising an inf have greatly increased importance. Give montior mfr serial number and model of monitor, model of card, and whether or not you are using the inf file that came with windows or if you have installed a new inf from their site if you have problems after grabbing a newer inf file from mfr site for monitor. Also, run dxdiag from start|run and tell them what Directx version is running, OK??? Have seen Directx influence actual refresh rates chosen from an inf and a res and depth reset typically is a monitor variable change-- much more often that (monitor related problem) than a card dying unless this almost always happens after box has been on for more than 4-6 hours and card is overheating.

Agreed, should not be happening, but has happened to me many times and fixing refresh inf table or limiting refresh out of adapter typically stopped it if I was careful with that. MFR can also send you or point you to a table of acceptable rates by mode of resolution and color depth-- and those are often right in a manual in Acrobat Reader file type right on mfr site. I KNOW a bad inf file killed a KDS 17" XFlat for me, and mfr replaced it and told me where to find the new inf also. Bad modes in essence ovrheated CAPs in power supply circuit in one batch of KDS 17" XFlats, bad parts sent to KDS and normal QC did not find them. Monitors with weak Power Supplies in them got shipped as result.

Sorry Ageek, I have a very hard time reading your post.. :P

Thing is, this wasn't happening with my system with the Ti4600 installed.

I am going to try to turn off fast writes, what is that for anyways? Does it hurt performance?

no, most people will tell you to always turn fast writes off. remember there may be a bios option, and there is definitely an option in the ati driver options. you gots to disable both. this is the same issue that was causing crash problems with call of duty - disabling it actually tripled my fps in game

Try this page. I used the mb bios when I put my Radeon on the computer http://www.omegacorner.com/index_ati.html can't link the page but it is under MB Bios. I have had problems in the past with ATI not recognizing my Monitor refresh properly but the3.10 did this time.

I looped 3D Mark for a good long time, and ran multiple sessions of 3d Mark 2K3... it seems to have fixed itself?

I am gonna overclock and see what happens.. for the hell of it. Disable Fastwrites and see what my score becomes.
