Dell Drivers

So it seems you can't download Dell drivers anymore unless you are on a Dell that has the exact hardware you need the driver for? While I'm rebuilding a Dell I download the drivers to my ThinkPad while the Op Sys is installing. Lately our friends at Dell give me some very cryptic error about how the "referrenced assembly cannot be found on this system."

Anyone else noticed this?

Is there a way around it?

The way it is, I have wait for the Op Sys to install, plug in a NIC I know, install the driver, then go to Dell's site and get the drivers. :grumble:

What drivers are you trying to install?

Unless you have a problem the only drivers you will get benefit from upgrading are graphics and possible sound. You can get those drivers direct from chipset manufacturer (ie ATI or nVidia) and they will probably be newer than those from Dell anyway.

No, not upgrading drivers. It's on rebuilds. I don't always (in fact usually don't) have the drivers & utilities disk for the machine I'm rebuilding so I end up with a lot of yellow ? in Device Manager. And the nic card is always one of them. Makes it tough to download the NIC driver when the only way Dell will let me get it is if I'm online with the NIC card that isn't installed!

Give me the Dell Model number and I'll give you the direct links and order to install them... and as far as I know you can still download drivers from a non-Dell.

I went to Dell support website, searched for "broadcom 440x", and selected "drivers and downloads" on the left column titled "narrow your selection". I was able to download the driver. I am using my Latitude D630 laptop right now and there is no 440x interface on this one.

I'm throwing down the gauntlet. Prove me wrong. Go the support.dell.com and plug in a Srvc Tag, then download any driver on that page. I haven't been able to do it for months.....unless I am on a Dell that matches that Srvc Tag.

As it is now, if I have to open up the computer, take a number off the chip, then Google that just to find the right driver....and do that for all the drivers I'm missing on a rebuild, it adds at least 45 minutes to the whole rebuild. Or I install a temporary NIC and go to the dell site that way.

How about going through the model number to download the latest drivers if the tag is not working. I never use the tag numbers.

This tag number worked for me using Firefox on the Latitude D630. I downloaded the BIOS.

Thanks guys. Then the problem is in this ThinkPad. I killed my HOSTS file for a test and still got this. Does it in Firefox and IE.

I'm on the right track now. I think it's trying to start Dell's new download manager. Lots of talk "out there" about how that has caused problems. But in the error is the address of the file I want, and I can cut and paste that ftp location and get the file. The trick is to unglue my account from automatically starting their download manager.

OK, for anyone who has searched to get here, Dell tells you to delete all your cookies, then you will see the window where you choose to use the download manager. Then you can choose "Download via your Internet Browser" as shown in this attachment. Be sure to check the "remember my selection" box so you don't have to do this again.

For those that know how to search through your cookies and don't want to delete them all, I just deleted all cookies with "dell" in the name.

    Thanks guys.
