Can't really blame them, if you ask me. The computing industry as a whole has been trying to stop piracy since... well, computers.

The piece that I was focusing on was that people who wanted to pay 1/2 the price for a memory card are getting hosed. Did I read the article incorrectly?

Nope, I think I did actually. I read something about piracy into the article that apparently wasn't there.

    Bummer.

Notice it says unauthorized, not third party though.

It's a bummer situation for everyone, I don't understand why Microsoft didn't do this from the start. It's not like they couldn't anticipate the problem.

Edit: Jarred's exactly right, I've seen the story spun that way elsewhere but the source post from Major Nelson is pretty clear that 3rd party is okay as long as it's an authorized device.

How do I know if I have an "Authorized" device? I have a generic 2gb laptop HD in a USB enclosure attached to my XBox, I just use it to store some music to play while I game. Is it going to stop working?

From my understanding of it's something you have bought at Walmart or Target you are fine.

Mainly they are banning cards that were never approved, such as memory card to SD card readers which i primarily used to flash exploits on them.

If it's something you purchased from a a reputable retailer you should be fine.

Basically: If you are a pirate, your shit will break.

There is nothing pirated on it, but I can't imagine that my device is specifically recognized by Microsoft...

I didn't buy it as a single device. It's an old laptop hard drive, which I put into an enclosure that I got on clearance at Microcenter.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it still works.

So, instead of bringing the astronomical prices of Xbox storage media down to Earth, they've decided to ban the use of storage media that's not priced astronomically. Great job!

    I've found third-party 4gb 360 memory cards on google for $40.

It's not that big of a deal. Most people just use their HD anyways.

98% of people will be unaffected by this.

Yet another outrage for no reason. All it will result in is more authorized versions with a $2-5 premium.
