Weird behaviour in free space on HDD

I'm running Windows Vista on my lappy, and it has 2 partitions (C and D drives). The OS is installed on my C Drive, which has a total capacity of 50GB, whereas D drive is for all my other files and programs, total capacity of 110GB.

The thing i've noticed lately is, on one day i can have 12GB of space left in the C Drive. As the day goes on as I use my lappy, I can see the amount of free space dropping really quickly. Now initially I thought it might be temp files or something, but having 12GB free in the morning and having having 8.5GB left in the evening is a little extreme for temp files don't you think?

Another weird thing is, sometimes, for no reason, the free space is C:\ goes back up to 10+ GB, where it comes down again. I'm no noob using computers, but this really has me puzzled. I mean, I didn't install anything or put anything into my C:\ and the free space reduces itself by 3-5GB? I've checked time and time again the total space used in my C:\ and it stays the same (hidden files and folders + space allocated for extra page files included) so where did the 3-5GB of space go? Is this normal for Vista running systems?

How much ram do you have and does the space come back after a reboot?

It sounds like Windows Vista System Restore is the problem. Check out this article and see if this helps you out. http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=1077 I had this same problem on my PC when I was running Vista. My C:\ drive would lose space and then gain it back. Limiting the size Vista allocates to system restore helped the problem.
