Win 7 Full vs. Win 7 upgrade

This is a rather convoluted story but I'll try to shorten it. Was sold Win 7 Full when I'd asked for Win 7 Family upgrade. Discovered the error when I was trying to validate the 2nd &3rd PC's. Contact MS support and say hey, store screwed up bought the more expensive software didn't need. How about you keep the extra money and just give me the 3 PC upgrade key. They say no can do, won't work, have to uninstall and reinstall etc. This means going out to the store and buying the correct version and reinstalling on 3 PC's, major pain, major down time. Given the article about upgrading RC vs. by simple tweeks to registry, am I being fed a line by Tech support? Do I really need to do this work or can I simply change the key when I get it?

It is very likely that you will simply be able to change the key if your current copy of Windows 7 Full is 7 Home.

Thanks, just picked up the replacement software so I'll give that a try.

Yes, all it needed was a key change and it activated. Good to know, as MS's tech support wanted me to do a complete delete and reinstall.

They tend to be rather generous with your time.

I've never seen it put that way, but it is dead on. :D

Two of the 3 machines I upgraded were Gateways with the RECOVERY partition. Do I really need to keep this anymore?

No, it is invalid with Win7, that recovery partition will only recover the original OS that was shipped on the machine.
