Reloading OS

edited November 2009 in Science & Tech
Hi, I have a dell 8400 that my friend gave me without the OS disks. It had Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 in it. She was told is needed a new hard drive. It was working (not great) so I tried reformatting it to Windows Home edition from my other computer, but it will not load. I then tried Windows XP Pro, that seemed to load fine til the end when the blue screen said

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears agaion follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer, Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.

Chkdsk /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7A40528, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
"
:mean:

I installed the hard drive in a external enclosure and did a virus scan with no problems. I see the files on the drive. Is it missing something?
any help would be great, thanks

Did you do a drive scan on it to check for surface damage?

If the error occurred at the initial setup of the system, the system might have been installed on an unsupported disk or SCSI controller.

I wonder if your disk controller needed drivers installed. Maybe you got far enough into setup to rule that out, I'm not sure. Otherwise could be a hardware issue.

Sorry, I'm not sure how to go about it?

While I had it in the external enclosure

    I did:
    1) right click on the drive/properties/tools/error checking
    2) right click on the drive/properties/tools/defragment

Can you explain how to do a drive scan?
    thanks

Dring if you want to check the physical disk itself, download SeaTools for Windows here.

Where did you get the Win XP Pro you installed? Any chance it was an unattended slipstream install disk? If the sysprep.inf on those is setup for the master computer, and not your new SATA controller, you'll throw a 7B all the time.

You install the drivers during the Windows installation process.

I came upon this page that might help you.
