Why do I have trouble with official BIOS ?

edited December 2009 in Hardware
Hello, I've gone through two revisions of my motherboard,
the first being replaced under warranty from Biostar.

Their official latest BIOS, which has been out for 2 years now
hasn't worked in either of my boards. I've tried with onboard
video and pci-e video card, and the problem is the same -
there is a solid hang within 10-15 minutes, usually while browsing a web page.
(at this point I have to reach for the power button)

I have a workaround, an older BIOS in which the problem doesn't occur.
(however, the newer BIOS, the system seems more responsive until it
hangs).

I've reported it to Biostar, but they have no explanation and asked me to
continue using the older BIOS. Under the circumstances and the age of the
board, it's understandable in a way. The problem is, it doesn't do much
for my confidence in Biostar, and the likely hood of future purchases.

So at this point, I'm researching it myself.
The board is an Nforce 410 chipset board, has anybody experienced anything
similar to this?
Thanks for any info.

Is your CPU supported? What kind of RAM are you using? What OS?

I have used two CPU's in this board. AMD64 3200 (single core) and
    an AMD64 x2 4200 (dual core).

I've also used two sets of memory, currently OCZ, pc3200 2 1GB sticks.
Prior to that, 2 512K sticks of Corsair Value Select.

I had three permutations running, the AMD64 3200 with both sets of memory
(separately), and the AMD64 4200 x2 with just the OCZ set. (My current setup)

In each case I tried the troublesome BIOS and in each case the problem occurred.

When I used onboard video, the screen would display a bizarre diagonal pattern at the time of
the freeze. With the EVGA 8600GT installed, the hang still occurred, but without any image
    distortion.

I see that the dude in this post traced it down to a hardware conflict. I read
through the description of his post and the symptoms seem spot on,
including the corrupt diagonal display on the monitor.
In his case, when he swapped out the network card, the problem disappeared.

My network card is on the motherboard - I guess I could buy a nic and retry.
    Hmmm ... interesting - here's his post.
