I really like this idea. I think if ESPN had taken to broadcasting internet gaming competitions instead of Texas hold em, they would have achieved a similar level of burst in popularity seemingly out of no where. I mean really, spectating poker? I never would have guessed that'd be successful.
You know, bindle brings up a damn good point. But I feel like if video games had burst in popularity like that at the time, they probably wouldn't have been able to make a slow growth as an art medium - instead being relegated to 'entertainment only' purposes to make a quick buck. We would have lost the soul, man! :P
By the way - In the Texas Hold'em games, you always feel like you're watching a pro, due to the nature of the game. What if you were watching a Texas Hold'em match with someone who was a blatant idiot, but accepted as a pro? I think I'd get bored.
That is, can you imagine how painful it'd be to watch gamers who are WORSE than you on xfire? It'd just make you cranky!
