internet stops loading

edited December 2009 in Science & Tech
This is basically the same problem as this.
http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50136
Theres something wrong with my modem. It always stops loading pages or downloading stuff. I already tried restarting it. The router is a Belikn Wireless G and the Modem is a SpeedStream 4100 DSL Modem. I'm running windows XP. I tried not using the router and just plugging it into the computer and it didn't work so I guess it's probably the modem. I tried cleaning the registry and unplugging and plugging back in some of the cables and stuff.

Could be a DNS issue, could be an MTU issue. Is it consistent or is it random. Is it only some pages, every page works fine for a couple hours etc....
  • edited December 2009
It's all pages and it's all the time. It seems like it goes away for 2 months, comes back for a month, goes away for two months, comes back for a month, and keeps doing that.

does it start loading the page then stop or is it not even able to find the page?

    1. Is this at peak usage times/same times of the day?

    2. Can you resolve host names quickly and efficiently?

    3. Have you run any pings to the network IP addresses you are trying to reach? You could have packet loss

    4. Have you run any traceroutes to known IP addresses/host names? You could have a long hop or lots of hops (bad routing at ISP level) to your destination

    5. Check you don't have some form of spyware/sneakware that is flooding your internet connection from your device?

    :)

It just stops loading. Not all the time just sometimes. It's not just pages it's when your downloading something also.
    1. Is this at peak usage times/same times of the day?
Don't really know what your asking but people are on it a lot of the day.
    2. Can you resolve host names quickly and efficiently?
What do you mean by resolving.
    3. Have you run any pings to the network IP addresses you are trying to reach? You could have packet loss
    No.
    4. Have you run any traceroutes to known IP addresses/host names? You could have a long hop or lots of hops (bad routing at ISP level) to your destination
    No.

Heres a screenshot I took a while ago of my processes. I got rid of some of them like google updater and stuff but a lot are still on my computer. Should I take off apple software update?. Thanks.

I looked at your processes. Quite a bit of updater kind of stuff that's just slowing you down. But I'm not sure that's the cause of your main problem. A couple reactions:
    1. I see firefox running. Does it do this with IE or another browser? What if you bring up IE with no addons?
    2. Have you done a hijackthis scan? I wonder if some nasty has knitted into your winsock?
    3. Can you borrow someone's laptop to see if it does that same thing behind your router?

    Heres my hijack this scan.

Intrernet explorer does it also. I don't know if it has any addons.

Can you borrow someone's laptop to see if it does that same thing behind your router?
It doesn't work on my laptop either but I haven't tried the laptop without the router. Another thing, my brother has a computer using the internet hosting all of his music or something. That might be important.

Well, there are no 010’s which are winsock entries. When you ran the scan, did you see any errors that said HiJackThis couldn’t access your HOSTS file?

I see you’re running AVG, and used to have Norton Internet Security that did not uninstall all the way….per usual. That’s why you have symlcsvc.exe running. That could make a problem. Download the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of the rest of Norton. Never look back my friend.

As for your main problem, delete these, but are unlikely to be the culprit:
    <O:p</O:p
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

I would also download malwarebytes and run the quick scan. Remove all that it finds.

If you just want to speed things up, these are all unnecessary:<O:p</O:p

Not necessary. You can start Steam when you want it.

You can be pretty brave with HiJackThis as it keeps a backup of all the entries it deletes. If you turn off something and loose some functionality you want/need, you can always go into the backups and restore them.<O:p</O:p

I'm using all those things I think except for the text to speech application things. If I get rid of it, does that mean I can't use it anymore forever? I think it comes with windows XP. Thanks.

No if you just stop it from starting with Windows, you can always go back in and re-enable it through HiJackThis.

So you still have the problem? You mentioned your brother's computer. Does he have the problem behind the same router?

I plugged my laptop and my pc into just the modem and it worked fine. I guess that means its the router? What should I do now? Thanks.
You mentioned your brother's computer. Does he have the problem behind the same router?
I don't know. Hes using it as a server or something.

Cripes gunmonkeys. When you say he's using it "as a server or something" that's a clue. Depending on what kind of server he's got set up, your computer might be getting it's IP info from your brother's computer, and God-knows-how that plays into things.

When you plugged straight into the modem, you took your router out of the loop, but you also took your brother out of the loop. Try going through your router with your brother's "server" out of the loop. Does it work then? If it doesn't, it's the router you and should reset it to factory defaults and start over. If it does work, you need to find out more about what your brother's computer is doing.

You need to get your DNS settings and other IP information from your router, not from another "server" that's behind the router.
