Help!!!

edited December 2009 in Science & Tech
Hi

I'm not a geek but have a real problem, I met a guy and decided it was not for me, he has now managed to use "mobile Phone Triangualtion and work out where i work (although this is an old employer) and says he has my ISP Address.
Does this mean this nutter can find out where I live and other details about me etc?

K

He's using your lack of understanding to play a power game. He's lying, and he's an idiot.

Permit me to be blunt: Everything he told you is bullshit. You can't triangulate a mobile phone without a federal warrant, and having your IP address doesn't mean anything without a subpoena.

Welcome to Icrontic. File a restraining order.

If he does indeed know where you work, he probably used other methods: google, facebook, various social networks, social engineering (called a friend? Asked someone? etc.

He may be using that information as a lever to frighten you even more.

He CANNOT "triangulate" your mobile phone, and your IP address is totally useless information.

    Here is my IP: 69.14.0.138

And here is about all you can do with it:

    http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ipall/?tool_id=67&token=&toolhandler_redirect=0&ip=69.14.0.138

See how it says "Eastpointe"? That is BS - that's where my internet provider's premise equipment is. I don't live in Eastpointe.

If you truly fear for your physical well-being, definitely file a restraining order. The threats alone are enough to warrant one.

Even though he cannot figure out where you live and where you work through an IP address and your cell phone, I would still think about getting a restraining order if he continues to harass/scare you, and definitely if he makes any threats. There are other ways of getting that information (phone book if you have a land line, for example), or if he can see your facebook page.

If your life is on facebook and the net in general there are far - far easier ways for him to find out all that he needs or wants to know about you. The old school methods for finding out information on someone are still the best. Hell he knows your name plain and simple lots he can do with that a phone number and an address.

Without sugar coating it if you think this guy is actually going to cause a problem file a report. The police won't be able to do anything unless he actually physically harasses you. But the fact that you filed a report is still important.

You could also be full of shit - I don't know, don't care. The point remains the same. Internet voodoo is all just smoke and mirrors. Someone knows your name that's good enough.

Whatever internet mediums you met / converse with him through probably offer a block option, which would at least cut his ability to put forth further threats. Mark his e-mails as spam, so you won't have to deal with them in your inbox. It wouldn't hurt to change his name in your mobile phone's contact book as "DON'T ANSWER," just to remind yourself never to answer. Ever.

If you take away his means to feel powerful (aka his every form of contact with you), odds are he'll lose interest and find someone else to harass.

That's where it starts ;) we may be a bunch of geeks (and in some cases absolute nerds) but don't assume we don't know how to party :cool2:
