Hijacked Google Links, Can't Open Any Spyware Removal Tools

I would love to post a HJT log for you guys, but I can't.

So, let me just get on to the description of my problem. About two months ago I managed to pick up some trojan/virus/whatever (multiple, I'm pretty sure). The main issue I'm having right now is that I am still unable to open any security or spyware removal programs (HJT, Malwarebytes, Searchbot S&D, Avast, etc.) and my google links continue to be hijacked. The only thing that will start and remain running is McAfee OAS. Otherwise, the virus kills any security-related programs after running for a little while. It originally started out as the Antivirus Pro 2010 virus and having my google links hijacked. I've managed to clean out the AP 2010 myself, and most of the changes it made to my computer by painstakingly going through my registry files, although I'm sure I missed some. I've also attempted to run RKill to end any malware processes and generate a RootRepeal log. Rkill runs as far as I can tell, but RootRepeal gets stopped after running for a little bit.

If anyone has any ideas, that would be lovely, because this is starting to get a little ridiculous. Thanks!

P.S. Running Windows XP Pro

    Hi. :)

A few things before we start....
    1. Please Read All Instructions Carefully.
    2. If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
    3. Please do not run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
    4. If you have to go away for an extended period of time, let me know.
    5. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear".
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

You may want to rename MBAM.exe to xxx.exe, and see if that enables you to run MalwareBytes. If it works, run a full scan with it.

Next let's have you download ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for downloading and instructions for running the tool:

Go here ======> A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix <====== Go here

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. This applies to XP Pro and XP Home users only.If you have SP3 installed you will need to use the download meant for SP2.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should get a prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

    Please continue as follows:

    (1) Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    (2) Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the MBAM log and C:\ComboFix.txt for further review, so that we may continue cleansing the system.

Caution: Never run and remove files with Combofix unless supervised by a qualified security analyst who is experienced in the use of Combofix. Misuse can cause serious computer problems.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me! ComboFix is currently unavailable, so I'll get that log to you as soon as it's possible (if I can).. And still no luck with Malwarebytes, even after changing the file name and running it in safemode.

Your version of HijackThis is outdated.

You will have to download HijackThis 2.02:
    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download

Then post the new generated log in your reply and we'll take it from there.

I wish I could run the latest version, but I'm pretty sure the only reason I am able to run that version is because it IS outdated. I just tried to downloading the latest version for the upteenth time, and, surprise-surprise, it gets terminated when it's almost done scanning. If there's anything you can tell me from that log, that would be great. If not, I will continue to try and get the lastest version of HJT to work while waiting for combofix to be put back online.

How about renaming the HijackThis file (latest version) before running it?
  • edited December 2009
Believe me, I've done that with every program I've tried running. :(
  • edited December 2009
OK...in that case, run HijackThis and place a tick by the following entries:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

Close all other windows except HijackThis and press "Fix Checked". Then close HijackThis and restart the computer.

Then download Dr. Web to the desktop:
    Dr.Web CureIt! — ??????? ????????? ?????????! ??????? ???????, ?????? ?????????? ?????????!

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    1) Restart your computer
    2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
PC Hell: How to Start Windows in Safe Mode

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file. It will then suggest to run an expressscan -- this you should allow.
After this (Dr.Web writes "Select object for Scanning" at the Bottom-left), you click Options->Change settings.
Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
Choose the "Actions"-tab, and choose "Rename" under all the Malware-issues.
Back at the main window, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan (a red dot shows which drives have been chosen).

Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start. The first time Dr.Web finds something, you click "Yes to All", and it will after this automatically fix what is found.
After the scan: Close Dr.Web. Click Start->search, find the following file: CureIt.log, and copy the last lines of this log into the thread (starting with: Scan statistics).

Okay, so I followed your directions completely. Did the express scan, said it found some viruses, so I continued on in changing the settings like you said, and running a custom scan with my selected drives. It seemed to scan okay but to finish a little too quickly. At the end it said it had found some viruses, and suggested I run a complete scan (however, I never got a prompt about it finding viruses and selecting "Yes to All" to fix them). So I ran a complete scan, as well - same result. And even stranger, this is what I get for a log everytime:

    Scan statistics
    Scanned: 8
    Infected: 0
    Modifications: 0
    Suspicious: 0
    Adware: 0
    Dialers: 0
    Jokes: 0
    Riskware: 0
    Hacktools: 0
    Cured: 0
    Deleted: 0
    Renamed: 0
    Moved: 0
    Ignored: 0
    Scan speed: 0 Kb/s
    Scan time: 00:00:01
Scanning interrupted by user! - no viruses found

And I definitely did not pause or stop the scan at anytime. :|
