This bodes well for the Moment and Moto Droid getting 2.0 early next year as well, as I doubt Sprint and Verizon would want to hold people off of the flagship Android phones getting 2.0 while admittedly lower-end phones get it.

Thrax, the Eris isn't the Hero. Sprint has a version of the Hero, and the rest of the world has a Hero, but the Eris is its own animal.

In fact, Eris will be benefiting from the work HTC's already doing with the Hero, since all they're really needing to do with it is port the Sense UI to 2.0 or 2.1.

No, I'm afraid that is simply incorrect. The first Hero with the controversial chin is the EMEA version; the Hero with the redesigned fascia is the Sprint version; and the Verizon version is yet another rework with a new fascia and a proximity sensor.

In fact, the Droid Eris has lagged behind the Hero in firmware development only because Verizon was delaying the update. This weekend's 2.x news came about specifically in the context of customers requesting it.

Well, I consider extra hardware + a different name to be a different device, but if they're considered the same family, they're considered the same family, I guess.

Not just the same family Snark, they are damn near the same hardware internally.

So are most of the phones on the market for the last year, in my experience. How many 528MHz processors, 3G radios, and 2.4" LCDs are out there?

    No matter.

Quite a few snark. My understanding is that there isn't a standard for mobile device processors such as with x86. Thus a motorola proc can differ quite a bit from a qualcomm proc or any other mobile device processor. Same thing with the radios and all the other hardware in the phone.
