    What's your budget?

We can give you much more detailed suggestions if you provide some extra information, such as your max budget, what you have now, etc.

    General suggestions:

    Don't buy into an LGA775 (Core 2) or LGA1156 (Core i5 / Core i7 800 series) platform. Both are dead-end sockets. If you're going intel, spring for LGA1366 (core i7 900-series).

If you're going AMD, get a board with some iteration or other of the 790 chipset and DDR3 RAM. That ensures you get a pure AM3 board (must be paired with an AM3 CPU, but there's huge selection in that socket now).

Bang for your buck in graphics is currently squarely in ATI's court. One or more HD5000-series graphics cards are going to be your best bet - don't buy NVIDIA.

Hard Drive - stick to Seagate or Western Digital. They're the most trustworthy brands.

Don't go cheap on the power supply. Spring a few extra bucks for a good brand (like an OCZ or Corsair power supply).

I think that's all the general advice I got at the moment.

Without more specific information on what you're trying to build, it's hard to give you targetted advice - even a wild guess at your possible budget would be better than nothing. Other things you could tell us for more helpful suggestions would be what you intend to do with the system (gaming, workstation, server, etc), what your intended upgrade cycle should be (how long do you want the PC to last before you have to replace parts to keep up with software), other things along those lines.

more deatils on what you want to do, and a ball park range of budget. I could lay out a $20k system for you; but I would guess a personal supercomputer for matlab isn't what your looking for.

I am looking for something that would go good for gaming, and budget i'd have to say max 3.5k
Just some helpful insite would be nice.
    Thanks.

Thanks man, wanna give me any tips?

If I had 3K laying around to build a system I would definitely start with an amazing case and water cooling plan.

Heck, with all that cash you could afford that massive Thermaltake Level 10 case that just came out.

There are also Antec 1200's from some specialty vendors that pre mount a top fitted radiator that is really, really nice.

The sky is the limit with 3K these days, you can do just about anything you want.

Well, those things look pretty good, i don't actually have 3.5k laying around, but that was my MAX budget, because everyone kept telling me to tell my budget, i don't want to spend that much, but some top of the line stuff would be nice.

    Extra,

How much do you want to spend? You throw out a figure then say.. well I don't want to spend that much. Seriously you can't expect us to make a recommendation if that recommendation is beyond reach.

    Can you afford 1500?

I am not trying to be rude and I am glad you came to Icrontic, I am just giving it to you straight. Until you tell us what your spending limit is. This thread is just spinning its wheels.

    Welcome to Icrontic :)

OKay, well that is my limit, i will spend that much. It's just cheaper and good would be better then just expensive and good.
    So my budget is 3.5k
So i would like some insite on items up to 3.5k
    For everything.

  • ExtraRadicalExtraRadical Michigan
    edited December 2009
I dont need a monitor but a good 20+ would be sweet.
And i want the World of warcraft gaming mouse, if its good.
I just like it because of the 5 extra buttons and sweet look.
And i would like a split keyboard.
    No optical drives.

Do you want to go stock or are you into overclocking?

Things I would look at with a budget of 3.5k
    • SSD boot drive that is ATA TRIM compatible (OCZ or intel)
    • Raid controller
    • a stack of 1TB drives in a raid 5; for storage, user files, and paging file drive
    • Blueray drive with blueray burner
    • i7 900 series (maybe even an extreme edition i7)
    • full ATX Mobo with 58x series chipset, SATA3 and USB3, that supports max 24GB of ram minimum. As well as support for multiple PCIe x16 cards (as many PCIe x16 as you can get, which I think is about 7 slots, even though the 7 slots don't support the full x16 on all the slots)
    • A quality case
    • at least 2 top of the line Video cards in SLI or Crossfire (if you do ATI get a third nvidia for physX)
    • minimum of 12GB of DDR3 ram or spring for the 24GB kit
    • 64bit-Win7 pro
(I'm sure with this list you can easily exceed your budget)

SATA3 and USB3 are included so you don't have to get an expansion card for these features if/when you need them....but you can opt for and add on card later which will use one of the PCIe slots (another reason for having as many PCIe slots as you can get)

3 monitors is going to be really new to me.
I had previously used 2 for about a week and it was amazing, although i had them on the wrong sides, (lol) it was still really good, 3 should be quite the improvement.

I lowered a few items to stay around your budget ...

you could save a little by dropping the Nvidia card for the physX, the Raid 5 going with a single 1TB, and dropping the 3rd monitor (using your existing for the 3rd or go to just two monitors) dropping the cost by about $447 with those adjustments

With the i7 you'll get to run 8 threads vs the 4 threads on the AMD phenomII (if that makes a difference for your gaming)

    Photodude: Core i7 920 is a tri-channel CPU, meaning a 2x4GB memory kit won't work. It needs to be a 3x#GB kit.

Secondly, a dedicated PhysX PPU with AMD cards as the primary renderer requires software hacks, which means it's not advisable for your average user. That also makes your exorbitant motherboard choice unnecessary... Something like the DFI LP DK X58-T3eH6 is just as suited for the job for nearly $200 less.

I want to add that Gigabyte board on the AM3 I suggested is already equipped for USB 3.0 and SATA 3, and AMD has declared that their next gen chips will be compatible with AM3 so its a really solid future ready platform.

Ready for USB 3.0 devices, ready for SATA 3 SSD's, ready for six core AMD CPU's as they become available, its a great foundation to build a system on. If I were building today I absolutely know that would be the mobo I would select.
