Recording sound from speakers... can't reverse it!

edited December 2009 in Science & Tech
Sorry for the convoluted problem, I'll try to be as clear as possible.

I recently changed some settings in my audio configurations to be able to record the sound in my speakers. Now I'm trying to record from my microphone again, and I can't remember what settings I changed. The microphone works, but no settings I play with will get any sound from it. I also tried a webcam with the same results.

I'm using realtek HD onboard audio, on a gigabyte motherboard.

I'm pretty ignorant, so please forgive me if I left out obvious pertinent imformation. I'll be happy to answer any questions from anyone willing to help me. :D

Are you trying to record sound or just get your mic to work for RPG games etc.

Either way the answer probably lies within control panel > sounds > recording tab

I'm trying to get my mic to work. I've played around with every setting I can find... I really don't know what I did.

I understand that but if you are a bit more specific it makes it easier for us to help you. What are you trying to do with your mike? record sound or use it for games, skype, msn or similar

All of the above. I can't get any sound from it. Not from Windows sound recorder program, not from ventrilo, or anything like that.

Although I was able to get sound by specifically choosing my microphone as the recording device in the Audacity program. But while that worked, everything else was still unresponsive.
