Windows 7, cannot attach files.

For the last few weeks I have been having problems with attaching files with Windows 7. I have the problem with IE8, Windows LIVE messenger and also with Firefox.
Whenever I try to attach a file Windows explorer, and the whichever application I'm using that I listed above will crash. I can go into safe mode and attach files fine. Also, in the case of MSN I can drag a file directly onto the name of the contact I want to send it to in the contacts list and it will go fine. The issue only occurs whenever I have to browse to the file.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
