Recommendations for a DVD Video burning software

I would like to burn a DVD-Video disc (meaning, I can watch the files on my DVD player that's connected to my TV set), and Nero 7 isn't working for me - It says it needs Nero Vision to burn .avi, .wmv etc formats, and it seems like Nero Vision has an issue with Vista, which is the OS i'm currently using. Can anyone recommend me a piece of freeware which would allow me to do what I want to do?

vista comes with Media center, and it'll burn DVD's (fyi: it'll likely take forever, and will possibly fail over and over again)

DVD encoding takes lots of time unless you have the right hardware (laptops typically don't have hardware that supports reasonable DVD encoding)

you also have the risk that some DVD players wont read DVD-r+- or DVD-RW+-

I also recommend avi2dvd. There are better methods, but all of them are considerably more complicated.
