That sounds more like Trojan/crapware kind of symptoms. Have you run a scan with something like malwarebytes?

Yep. I've run Adaware, Avast and spybot. Its been a bit less often since then but still cropping up

It also sounds like it could be a problem with the device. If windows is hanging while trying to read it, it would exhibit similar problems. Though usually it takes more then a few seconds for it to realize there is a problem, generally more like a few minutes.

I took it to mean that the external drive was still connected, but he was only trying to access his c:drive.

The other possibility is that the C:drive is messed up.

open up a command prompt (start>run>cmd) and type the following command
    chkdsk /r
it'll give you a message about needing to reboot for it to work. Reboot and let it run (could take an hour or more).

After it's done all of that try and go back into windows explorer and if you can right click on your c: drive go into properties and under the general tab turn off indexing at the bottom. Apply it to all files/folders.

OK guys. I've run chkdsk which said c: is clean. When i de-select indexing and apply i get "An error occured applying attributes to the file: c:\0096dee756d...\ msxml4-kb927978-enu.log Access is denied". The main problem does'nt seem to happen any more on c: IT happens every time i open either of 2 folders on f: which both only contain film/tv all as AVI files. ?

Seen that one Spike. Not sure if that's your whole problem, but you can just delete that whole folder, including the log file "msxml4-kb927978-enu.log".

Scroll about halfway down here, MS tells you it is "optional but you can delete the log file and the folder." In my experience, it may not delete until you take ownership of it first.

it's not unusual to get some errors when trying to turn off indexing. Just tell it to keep going and not worry about it.

try turning off the indexing on your f: drive now.

Spike, check this out. I think the xvid.ax part of that error might be your clue. Here's a bunch of guys who had your problem. Seems it has to do with previewing video files in a folder and a problem with xvid.ax. These guys deleted xvid.ax and solved the problem with no downside.
