Windows 7 Mouse Selecting Issue

Heyy guys
i've noticed that whenever i click and drag my mouse to select multiple objects on my desktop , the selecting area is a dotted line and not the usual colour filled area :eek:
if i try selecting multiple things in windows explorer , it selects using the colour filled area and not the dotted line
i dont know why
any idea how to get the colour filled area back for desktop selection ?
im running Windows 7

    Try this to start... Right click on Computer, click on the Advanced System Settings link on the left, and then click the Settings button under Performance. In the dialog that appears, place the bullet in "Adjust for best appearance". Apply it, and close out of all the windows. Reboot the PC.

    Theoretically, that should turn on all the fancy visual effects in the operating system.
