I'm going to take a wild guess, but an older XP machine that has not been updated to SP2 maybe?

So your issue is with the network cable not connecting when you plug it into the laptop?

check the bios, the network adaptor, and device manger make sure the device is active in all the locations. if it is active we can check to see what IP issues you might have.

As for wireless connecting with no connection What router is it? some need a security key, some need a pin, tell us the model and we might have an idea which it is for that router.

PS update all the drivers, bios, and vista (you may have to download on another computer and install from a USB or CD
