XP wont install

edited January 2010 in Science & Tech
Hey people, ive tried everything i can, and i cant get XP to install on my machine. It gets up to "Copying Files" and 26 mins remaining and then just hangs with no disc usage or HDD activity.

Its a Trinity I875P (Tyan S5101) motherboard

A 2.4GHz Pentium 4 CPU

1 40GB SATA HDD (Master)
1 120GB IDE HDD (Slave)
1 500GB External USB HDD (Currently Not Plugged In)

1 x 512MB RAM PC3200 400Mhz (Have just taken this out of a fully working machine, and i used "Crucial Memory Scan" to verify if it would work in my new machine)

Have diabled most of the onboard stuff (Lan, Audio, USB Mouse/Keyboard etc)

Have removed Wi-Fi Card and Sound Card, aswell as unplugged all the extra USB ports, Game Ports and Firewire

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Ive got it to install, but its still hanging even with another stick of RAM in it, which has got me wondering if the PSU is underpowered (It only has a max output of 180 Watts)

Could this be the problem? I do have a 300 and a 350 spare

That sounds like a really small power supply to be powering that computer. I'd give the 350 a shot and see where that gets you.

To my knowledge, I know a lot of people have trouble putting XP on a sata drive, but I really can't say more.

Your PC could be underpowered, I'd suggest trying the 350w PSU if your PC is struggling to support an additional RAM stick.

As for the XP issue installing on a SATA HDD I had the problem when I wanted to installed XP before, You need to go into your BIOS settings and find your HDD settings and make sure that SATA/RAID is enabled [That normally fixes the "Hard drive not found" error]
