\windows\system32\config\system

hi there,
I recently had a virus on my computer and my housemate installed a new version of norton when i was out and my computer completely crashed and i am unable to boot it up.

when i boot it up i received a blue screen with error (0x000007b (0xf78be524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I found a site that recomended doing a system restore in the recvoery console: http://www.icompute.info/System_restore_from_xp_cd.htm . This did not work at all and i even tried a recovery point at least 2 months prior but with no luck.

at this point i thought it would be best to just re-install windows but did not want to lose any of my files. i did a few searches on how to back up or copy hard drives by using different prompts such as xcopy but none of the prompts were recognised and i couldnt get anything to work.

after i tried that, when i boot up it doesnt go to the blue screen anymore but now appears with the \windows\system32\config\system error and will only attempt to boot from my windows xp home edition cd.

i came across the repair windows in 8 commands
http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp/2/ but this has also failed. at command 7 (chkdsk /r /f) it says 'the parameter is not valid' and will only allow me to do chkdsk /r. chkdsk r says: the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems. After i fixboot and exit im back at square one again.

At the bottom of page two it suggests it may be virus related and to have a chat on the forum as some of you may be able to assist.

please help

thanks
