Can't Boot Old Gateway

I am having problems getting an old Gateway running to retrieve some data before the computer is trashed. The computer will not boot and I am not sure what the operating system is. The sticker says Windows 98 but in the Advanced Options Menu the only choice listed under OS Choices Menu is Windows XP Professional so at this point I am assuming that it is XP and not 98. Is this correct.

The next problem is that I have not been able to boot either normally ot in safe mode. It seems that I have a problem with the config sys file and do not know how to fix that. I don't really care whether I get the computer running if there is another way to retrieve the data from the computer. The DATA is all that I am interested in.

Please help with the easiest solution to get the data whether it be a retrieval or getting the system running so that I can copy the data to a thumb drive. I do not have the OS disks for either the 98 or the XP for Gateway, but do have an XP Professional CD for a Dell computer. Don't know whether I can use that in any way. HELP--Please

Pull the harddrive out of the computer and put it into another computer either by physically connecting it with ide cables or by picking up an external drive bay (about $30).

Then assuming there is nothing physically wrong with the drive you'll be able to see it on the other computer.
