Yes, I did click on that, no I wasn't wearing protection
So, long-story short. I let my anti-virus lapse, just hadn't gotten around to renewing it yet. I downloaded and ran a somewhat questionable link. Things are not going so well at this point.
Running Windows XP SP3
First thing was that none of my search engine links worked. They'd all been hijacked and redirected me to nice little ad pages. Wonderful.
Second Windows File Protection Service told me that files had been replaced and wanted to help out. This is a netbook so no CD. It didn't come with a CD to boot, so I didn't have the original install media. It was asking for Windows XP SP3 cd. I downloaded the network install and made an ISO on a flash drive, and used VCD to mount that image. Windows FPS wouldn't see it. So, I went ahead and just reinstalled Windows SP3.
I've just repaired the install using the repair console and am now doing a chkdsk just to be sure. I believe my first step when I get back in is a hijack this log. I'll attach that to this post when I've got it.
Thanks.
Yes I knew better.
Yes I feel stupid.
