Radeon 9600XT 256MB or 9800SE 128MB

The 9800SE 128MB can be purchased for around $160

The 9600XT 256MB can be purchased for around $185

I would go with the 9800SE but I'm wondering if the 9600XT's 256MB advantage is worth it.

Anyway, I'm looking for a card between those price ranges, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

when I looked at 9600xts, I noticed that most/all the 9600xt 256s had tsop ram...and, after posting here, I found out that this was undesireable. You may want to make sure that the 9600xt has BGA ram, as that would sway possible decisions.

Also, 256mb has little impact on performance anyways :)

Recently my brother wanted my help while he was purchasing parts for his new computer and was looking at a 9600XT and wondering if a 9800SE would be any better. My reply was; "If you are going to spend that much and want as much performance as possible, you should spend a little more and get a 9700Pro 128mb for $219.00." He is now extremely happy he did!

If you can find the 9800SE with 256 bits memory, that's the clear winner. That's a 9800 Pro from the beginning with just 4 pipelines disabled. Even with 4 pipelines, it will still kill the 9600XT by miles.

Thank you for your input, I willl further investigate the options. Also, I'll keep in mind this article http://www.3dmaxx.net/forums/showthread.php?postid=10109#post10109 as posted by Leishi in another thread, once I read it.
