ATI Radeon X1950Pro driver fails

I have had my X1950 for several years and I have been just started playing around with a bit of OCing. I have a thread in the OC forum as I first thought this may be an OC issue but I have set all CPU and GPU speeds back to stock and I am still having the same problem. When I stress test with Furmark the driver stops responding and bails out. I can still game in 3d as I can Play TF2 and Tomb Raider so it only seems to happen under extreme load. I have the latest driver and I have tried it both with and without the ATI Catalyst suite. Can any one make any sugestions as to what could be causing it? I have a Corsair HX470 PSU which should be more than enough for my rig.

An initial guess is that perhaps your card can't handle the stress that Furmark puts on a video card. It is designed to push a GPU much harder than any game or other application is able, and this may be more than your X1950 can take at this point in life.
