I've bought two copies of Win7 already. I'm glad that they finally decided to sell it at sufficiently deep discounts for students. Now if their standard price was $35 for everyone, they'd really have a hot seller.

I wonder what the margin is on Windows. How much does a copy of Windows 7 have to sell for to break even with the amount spent on development?

Man, $35 is a sweet spot for moderate upgrades but I think $100 would be both fair and aggressive for something like Win 7.

Thats a good question. I wish I knew what the total development and marketing cost is. How long it takes a product like that to get in the black?

All the Anti-trust laws keep them from aggressively forcing their search and browser as a sure revenue stream so they really do need to charge something reasonable up front to re coup costs, I wonder what the take is though?

Considering the large growth of earnings, I would guess they are making pretty good profit per unit on Windows 7.

I think M$ definitely took the right tact with the aggressive pricing of their product, which has led to, imo, the large amount of sales they were able to push.

They made a good OS and they are reaping the rewards for it. I hope they have learned their lesson about putting out a good product and letting people use the beta and the RC to provide feedback before they start selling the OS.

I recently found out I can get a 10$ upgrade because I bought my laptop a couple months before the free upgrade program started. I'll be buying a copy for it. Might even look into buying a copy for my netbook at some point. It's just that good.

Letting people use the beta and RC of 7 to refine it before they started selling full copies was definitely the smart thing to do, I have to wonder how many problems were fixed by them doing that before the RTM was announced. For something like an operating system this of way of doing it seems like the only way to do it right.

They finally have created something that has been very well made, so I'd say, I'm glad that they are selling this well.

Nearly $20 billion dollars? Hot damn! I bought my copy of Win7 on release day and havn't regreted for on moment.
To people wondering what the devlopement and marketing cost for this OS was, Im pretty damn sure it wasnt anywhere near $20 billion. Thats just my opinion.
Now here's to getting a Zune HD with cellular capabilities!

My main rig and my new laptop have Win7 on them and I'm very happy with them. I just wish I had purchased a second copy at the 1/2 price sale last summer!!! I have every intention of putting 7 on my wife's rig ASAP!
